Urban riots, social tensions, dystopian landscapes and pop culture: Romain Gavras’ music videos have redefined the visual language of contemporary music, shaping an imaginary moving seamlessly between the street and internet culture. From Stress by Justice to No Church in the Wild by Jay-Z and Kanye West, through to his collaborations with M.I.A., Jamie xx, Surkin (GENER8ION) and Yung Lean, Gavras has transformed the music video into a collision space between cinema, politics and visual provocation. This panel explores how his imagery has captured the fears, conflicts and contradictions of the present day, often anticipating themes now central to contemporary debate: identity, systemic violence, marginality, the representation of the suburbs and the power of images in the digital age.
