Straddling the worlds of science and art, the restoration of films and their soundtracks is a process that is as delicate as it is remarkable, allowing cinema to be brought back to life – from celebrated classics to works once thought lost forever. Among them is Smog (1962) by Franco Rossi, the first Italian feature film shot entirely in the United States. Its soundtrack by Piero Umiliani and Chet Baker captures the lights and shadows of Los Angeles in the early Sixties through a remarkably introspective and modernist jazz sound. The workshop offers an opportunity to explore the techniques and challenges behind the restoration of both image and sound, tracing the journey from archival tapes and film elements to the final digital master. Participants will be joined by Andrea Fabrizii, CAM Sugar Catalogue Curator, and representatives from Cineteca di Bologna, whose festival Il Cinema Ritrovato has become one of the world's leading events dedicated to the preservation and rediscovery of cinematic heritage.
